FIELD NOTES / 01 / PLANNING
WHEN THE WEATHER
CHANGES THE PLAN.
A little flexibility can be the most useful thing you bring along.
2-minute read / A sample field note
A plan isn’t a promise to stick it out. It’s a way to make the next decision a little easier.
Before heading out, look at the forecast for the place and time you’ll actually be there. Then look beyond the first number. What direction is the weather moving? What will the route feel like if visibility changes or the trail gets wet?
Make room for a different day.
Choose a shorter route, a sheltered alternative or a comfortable place to turn around before you leave. Tell someone where you expect to go and when you expect to return. Make sure the people in your group know the alternatives too.
When conditions change, stop long enough to notice. Check the current information available to you, consider the people you’re with and choose the option that fits the situation. Getting home with a good story beats forcing the original plan.
Take the question with you.
On your next walk, pause at a junction and ask: What would I do differently if I needed to shorten this trip? You don’t need to be far from home to practice thinking ahead.
