FIELD NOTE 01 / PLANNING

WHAT IS YOUR PLAN IF THE WEATHER CHANGES?

What happens when the forecast turns, the route feels different or the original plan no longer fits? A little flexibility can be the most useful thing you bring along.

FIELD NOTE 02 / NAVIGATION

A map is a way of noticing.

Find three features on a map that you can see around you: a bend in a stream, a ridge or the shape of a trail. Notice how the small details make the whole landscape easier to understand.

Try it: Pause at the next trail junction and find your location before you look at your phone.

FIELD NOTE 03 / PRACTICE

The case for a familiar trail.

A familiar route can be a surprisingly good teacher. Walk it after rain, in a different season or at another time of day, and you’ll notice how much the same place can change.

Try it: Return to one spot and write down three things you didn’t notice last time.
